Volunteering for Comac

We are entirely volunteer run. Our dedicated team keeps our project running by carrying out a range of tasks. This ranges from preparing bikes for service users (asylum seekers) to choose from, through helping people fix up their bicycle, to doing some of the admin jobs the project requires.

You get to work in a friendly bike workshop, with other motivated volunteers, and an endless supply of tea and coffee.

We have the tools and parts you required to take one of our stock bikes and prepare it for the road.

What’s in it for you?

Volunteering for Comac is a great way to positively impact on the life of others. Asylum seekers have no right to work and very limited access to financial support, so providing a means of transport makes a huge difference to their lives

If you are interested in gaining experience working with people for whom English is a second language then Comac will give you ample opportunity to improve your and others language skills at our open sessions.

If you are interested in improving your practical skills then Comac will continue to throw practical mechanical challenges your way. There are always experienced mechanics on hand to learn from and work with.

Please note that due to availability of experienced volunteers who can give training, there may be a wait before we can find you a shift.

What can Comac expect from you?

Fixing up bikes is surprisingly skilled work, especially when the bikes need to be made safe for others. Therefore we ask if you think you can commit to volunteer with us for at least 6 months, so that you can get to a point where you need less supervision. We have a induction and probation period of 16 hours/one month to see whether the work suits you.

Some experience of fixing bikes is very advantageous as it means you’ll need less training. Though even our most experienced volunteers rely on each other for technical advice.

We typically run about 2-3 sessions a week, a mixture of days, evenings and weekends.  Most of our volunteers prefer to just do 1-2 sessions per week to fit around their existing routine.

Taking a week off now and then for holidays etc is totally fine and we will do our best to fit you in a different session if your availability changes.
